General Information
Tours of the School
The school does not have a special “Open Day”. Every day is Open Day at Perth Modern School because we want you to see our school as it is, day to day. Parents of intending students are welcome to book a tour of the school. Please telephone 9380 0555 to arrange a time.
Information evenings
The School conducts a number of Information Evenings each year. They focus on curriculum, student progress and course selection, as well as further information about areas of interest to parents and the community. School families are advised of any events by mail or through the school newsletter.
School hours
School commences at 8.50am and ends at 3.20pm except on Wednesdays when it ends at 2.20pm. Supervised Homework Club operates in the library until 4.30pm Monday to Thursday.
Some students, especially those involved with Music may need to attend school earlier one or two days a week. Others choose to arrive early or to depart late so that they may attend sports practice, complete work in the art studios or to attend special tutorials.
Reception and the school switchboard operate between 8.15am and 3.45pm each school day.
Travelling to Perth Modern School
The majority of students catch the train to school. The school is a short walk from both City West and West Leederville railway stations. Pedestrian underpasses ensure students may cross Thomas St safely. Buses from the Western Suburbs stop in front of the school. Both the Yellow and the Red Cat buses stop close by. Students from the coastal suburbs such as City Beach and Floreat walk from bus stops in Cambridge Street.
Although public transport links are good, a number of parents operate car pools especially from south of the river.
Fees
Perth Modern School fees are consistent with those of all public schools. School contributions are less than $200 each year.
Parents are requested to pay for students' personal requirements and some for co-curricular activities attract additional fees.
Orientation day
All new students are invited to an Orientation Day. The day provides an opportunity for the staff and students of Perth Modern School to make our new students feel welcome and to answer any questions they may have. The day also provides an opportunity for our new students to meet each other and to allow friendships to develop.
Parents are most welcome to attend the morning session which concludes at 11.20am (after morning tea)
Parking is available but on Orientation Day many parents take the opportunity for a “practice run” on public transport.
An Orientation Day for students entering Year 8 in 2009 is planned for Friday 5th of December 2008.
Uniform
The school has a uniform which was developed in consultation with the School Council and other members of the school community. The school operates a Uniform Shop to provide students with quality clothing at reasonable prices. Wearing the school uniform is compulsory.
Uniform Fitting
Students who receive an offer of a place will be advised on which Saturday mornings in October the Uniform Shop will be open for fittings and orders.
Communication with Home
Perth Modern School Newsletter
A newsletter is published twice each term and mailed to every family. Our newsletter is an important link between the school and parents.
Academic Progress
If students fall behind with their academic work or repeatedly miss assignment deadlines, parents may expect to be notified by the class teacher. A personal or telephone interview may then be arranged. Each semester a “Reporting Day” is held so that parents may meet with each of their student’s teachers.
Absentees –SMS
You may choose to be advised by an SMS message to your mobile phone if your student does not arrive at school by 9.30am (unless previously excused)
Canteen
The P&C Association operates a school canteen which provides lunches and refreshments for students. The foods sold through the canteen meet the healthy lifestyles guidelines.

Parking
During large events and the redevelopment phase at Perth Modern School, visitors should consider offsite parking alternatives. On other days limited parking for visitors is available in the Roberts Rd car park.
All other parking bays in the School are numbered and allocated.
Student Set Down and Pick Up
All students can be 'set down' or 'picked up' from outside either the Hamilton Street or the Subiaco Road gates.
